Heat Safety in Public Housing

In 2022, CAPA teamed up with the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) and the Home Forward housing agency to track summer temperatures inside public housing units. Residents were engaged in collecting and interpreting data, and identifying solutions.

Bronx, NY

Heat Mapping in the Bronx

Bronx and Manhattan community members work with South Bronx Unite and Columbia University’s Earth Institute to uncover disparities in exposure to urban heat with our flagship service, Heat Watch.

Mystic River Watershed, MA

Wicked Hot Mystic

In order to capture heat and air quality data, 80 volunteers mounted two types of sensors on their vehicle windows, continuously measuring air temperature and the amount of particulate matter (PM2.5) as the car drove along predetermined routes.
