Project Example

Oklahoma City, OK

CAPA partnered with sustainability planners at the City of OKC to survey residents about their experiences with and knowledge of summer heat and air pollution. The citywide survey was provided both online and in person and received over 2,200 complete responses. Using a targeted analysis method, CAPA compared results from seven ZIP codes that the City considered highly heat-vulnerable to five ZIP codes that were considered the least heat-vulnerable. Results indicated differences in exposure and coping capacity between the high and low vulnerability ZIP codes, as well as some similarities. For example, respondents in all ZIP codes recognized that summers had gotten hotter, struggled to keep up with rising energy bills in the summer, and favored public trees over private trees as a heat-management strategy. Survey findings helped direct City planners toward appropriate intervention, education, and support strategies.
